Environmental Economics

Research profile

The international team of the Professorship of Environmental Economics, headed by Prof. Dr. Stefanie Engel, aims to contribute to sustainability transformation by improving the understanding of the drivers of environmentally-relevant human behavior and developing policy interventions that support transformation from the behavioral side.

Our research particularly focusses on behavioral economic aspects of environmental policy.

In 2014, Prof. Dr. Stefanie Engel was honored with an Alexander von Humboldt Professorship, Germany’s highest endowed international research award, granted by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The Alexander von Humboldt Professorship for Environmental Economics at the University of Osnabrück was consequently established in October 2014.

Using methods from experimental and behavioral economics, we analyze the potential for and the impacts of alternative environmental policy approaches.

The main environmental themes considered at the professorship include climate protection and adaptation, conservation of biodiversity, and water resources management.

Information about Prof. Dr. Engel and her staff can be found under Team. An overview of the courses offered as well as information on the courses is linked under Teaching & Studies. Information about the research areas and experiments of the chair is provided under Research.
